The right to vote is a basic tenet of democracy. Women were denied that right in this country until 1920, and it took an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to secure universal enfranchisement. The story of the last campaign to pass that amendment is full of political intrigue, passion for democracy, and courage. A remarkable alliance between an African American community leader and the suffragists of Nashville in 1920 was on display at the first leaguer of Women Voters meeting in Nashville. Dr Carole Bucy speaks about this history, and a song based on Frankie Pierce’s speech is performed from the musical.
